Janos Slynt, the frog-faced, balding commander of the City Watch of King's Landing, is a man of low birth and high ambition whose loyalty is bought and sold for power. His father was a butcher, yet Slynt rises to become a lord and a member of the king's small council, a trajectory that reveals the brutal pragmatism of the Lannister regime and the collapse of the old feudal order.
